Katia Engel

Katia Engel is a choreographer and filmmaker based in Berlin and Yogyakarta (Indonesia). In the last two decades, she produced in both countries dance works, documentary films and multimedia works of video, installation and photography. Her projects have been presented in Asia, Germany and New York in dance festivals, film festivals and exhibitions.

Trained and certified as a Movement Analyst and Somatic Movement Educator (Laban-Bartenieff Institute of Movement Studies, New York), the core of her artistic process is evolving around the human body, reflections on human and non-human perception and conversations among the familiar and unfamiliar.

Katia is the initiator of points of listening, a conceptual framework within which she explores with her long-term collaborators how shifting sound environments continuously transform the human body from pre-history until the present time. The artists are currently in the process of developing hutan (translated from Indonesian: forest) a sonic installation and dance work in collaboration with dancers of Dayak (indigenous tribe of Kalimantan) roots.
